The Legendary Anime Concludes a Quarter-Century Era in 2026

It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Starting in January, once the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will go on a quarterly hiatus until spring, when the next major arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

Going forward, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every year for a cap of 26 episodes. The studio explains this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more content, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” However, Toei end by promising “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which suggests additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime previously took a six-month break that began in October 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The intermission was for the production team to enhance the visuals and allow the comic to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The anime couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has been able to deliver viewers with countless action sequences, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While some recap episodes appeared during the recent run, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the odd pause in the action. This additionally allows the manga, which is currently in the middle of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the anime. According to the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the anime adapting one chapter, with some instead handling one and a half chapters or more to compensate for time.

It's the end of an era for anime, as One Piece is the last big series to ditch the old-school way of production, which prioritized airing for most of the calendar. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course itself have numerous filler arcs, and the standard of the art can vary widely between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is organized in seasons, with a couple at most coming out each year, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the source material.
