Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.

No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
