Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate future in the side, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he concluded.
